Been making a lot of felt owls lately; both soft toys and puppets
here are a couple of iphone shots of my neighbors Isabella and her little brother Emilio playing with some of the puppets.
These felt toys and puppets evolved very organically from my marker drawings. I wanted to "draw" in 3 dimensions and bring my creatures to life in a more tangible way. Now I have almost fifty creatures and i don't think I will stop any time soon.

No Reneagde Fair For Me

So sad news on the Renegade Fair in San Francisco front. I wasn't accepted. No idea why ...Maybe I am not renegade(hipster) enough... anyway, I'm pretty bummed about it but am thinking I will do some other fairs in the mean-time. If anyone has a list of good fairs to do in California, I would appreciate hearing about them.

I do feel very happy with the way these creatures have progressed, however and wish I had a rich relative so I could spend all my time creating;).

In the meantime, I have listed a Lion for sale on my Etsy store. Please feel free to pay him a visit.

Yesterday my friend Amy and I got together really early in the morning (well about 9:30 which is early for us girls on a Saturday) to experiment with light and photograph some of my felty creatures.

Here are a couple of product shots...I have a bunch of process pics which I am working on getting off my camera, so I'll probably post them in the next couple of days and I will explain the process further with those pics as illustrations..

We had a really fun time figuring out the best way to light these critters and get good shots of them. We built a box using foam-core and re-purposed some desk lamps to function as photo lighting.

Anyway I am so much more satisfied with these pictures than I was of the previous ones I shot on my small Canon point and shoot camera. Thanks so much Amy for your expertize and time.

I've been a little amiss with updating the blog lately, but that's not to say I haven't been creating stuff. There 's been some drawing, but mainly lot of feltyness.

I now have about 25 of these lovely fellows. There are cats, bunnies, birds, whales, a lion and even a platypus.

I just finished Mr Le Lion last night.

He is based on my card design available on my Etsy store.
Some of these lovely felty creatures will soon be on the store soon too.

Soon the lovely Ames SF will be helping me get some better quality pics of my stuff. I'm really looking forward to that. Thanks Amy in advance!

New Toys

It's cold and rainy in the bay area. This time of year always feels like time is suspended and hibernation is the best option. The bears have it right for sure!

Last Minute Gift wrap

Happy Holidays to everyone. I hope you have the most wonderful Christmas.
I am puppy sitting over the holiday which is fun, but also lots of keeping a step or two ahead of potential chewing targets;). This little guy sure is active....also my tech set up is not quite what I have at home but I will do my best to keep up to date with the blog...

I love wrapping gifts, especially for my niece and sister and for various my friends and their offspring. ..Here's how the gift wrapping came out this year:

The first two pictures are of Isabella's present. Isabella is my neighbor- she's 5 and a half, loves drawing with me and also loves my TomBow markers. For this wrap, I used fuschia wrapping paper, fancy squares cut using a paper stamp, bird stickers, Japanese masking tape and japanese shiny cable to create the clothesline the birds are on. The letters are drawn on the fancy stamps with markers.
Isabella wore the letters and shiny string around her neck the night I gave her the gift.

These gifts are for my niece Maddy. Maddy is 16 and lives in Sydney. I've always sent her gifts that were wrapped creatively. The materials are similar to Isabella's gift but also, there is a piece of sequined ribbon that is part of a holiday garland.

Here's some embroidered gift wrap for my sister. The fabric is felt. My sister is very talented with knitting and sewing and such, so I'm pretty sure she will like this.

it's been cold and rainy here the last few days...it makes me just want to stay indoors and do creative things......

Meet kitty number1 and bird number two who have been added to the family. These are great fun to make.

To me they're 3D drawings. I start by cutting out the felt then "draw" in the features using small felt pieces and stitches. Sometimes, I start with a small sketch in my Moleskine, but sometimes I just start by cutting out the shape, then improvising the details, more like I sometimes paint.

I've also been experimenting with felting tools that fuse the felt shapes together. I don't always use this, but it has an interesting effect when combined with applique and embroidery.

I will start putting these little critters on etsy soon and also I want to participate in the Renegade Craft Fair in 2011 if they'll have me;)

Earlier in the week, I attended Chronicle Books' "Pitch For Charity" event at the Chronicle Books Headquarters. How it worked was: you made a donation to Habitat For Humanity and got a slot with an editor. I took my kids' book along and got to talk with Naomi

We had an unintended internet outage at the flat for four days this week. My cell phone also rarely works in my apartment so I wasn't planning on, but ended up taking a technology vacation.

Actually it was quite lovely so I just listened to the radio and did a lot of creative work.

If you had said to me even five years ago that I would do embroidery and like it, I would have thought you had mistaken me for somebody else. I had always thought of sewing as a particularly acute kind of torture....reference check my sister, Paula and my childhood best friend Maree if you want the details....Paula, our mother our grandmother all sewed portions of the blouse I had to make for needlework in high school and my mother was pretty unimpressed with the mark we were awarded..."7 out of 10...doesn't she know four of us worked on that shirt"...;)anyway, sewing was not a passion of mine...

Anyway.....roll forward many, many years, and here I am, sitting on the sofa thoroughly enjoying making small felt animals from some of my drawings. And I'm loving it as much as drawing...imagine that! I'll upload some better quality photos in the next few days ...the light in these is not great, but I wanted to share them.

Yesterday, I dropped of the hand-drawn postcards I made for the Postcard Show at the Lab in San Francisco opening on December 11, 2010 7-10pm. Also the show will be open on December 12at 1-6pm.

Studio Visit: Working on my children's book

A couple of days ago I pulled all the rough sketches I have into a folio and started developing some new sketches that were still needed for the story.

After a restful Thanksgiving Long weekend, I'm back working on projects.

First on my agenda is creating work for the Lab Annual Postcard Show in San Francisco. I've been doing some preliminary sketches to get in the right mood for the show....

Here's how this morning looks:

I'm not such a great list keeper, but I'm trying to improve! My lists tend to be a bit amorphous, but they are very helpful in keeping my life together( and making sure I don't hibernate during the colder months).

Gotta chase up some tasks that have been hanging around for a while, finish up some stuff from my Pikaland class (which was really helpful, btw).
So I have some short medium and long term goals to accomplish:

Short-term:

1. I was talking with someone about having an exhibition in their space. I need to follow up on that.
2. Find out more about licensing illustrations to product companies.
3. Keep working on my animal flip cards.Monsieurs Lion, Tigre et all are part of a larger project.
4. Reach out to other bloggers...feature and be featured
4. Extend my FB Colorfling page- (needs other tabs).
5. Business cards and other promotional materials...long overdue for these...ran out a while back.

Longer Term goals:

1. Complete my kids' story I started.
2. Make packages to send to kid and parent magazine editors.
3. Complete work for the exhibition I will have next year.
4. Get informed and ready for the renegade craft fair.
5. Approach book publishers.
7. Make shadow puppets. Always wanted to do this.
6. keep working hard on all this.

Virtual Studio Visit...

Almost everything I do starts in my sketchbook.

I walk around with a Moleskine and a bunch of Tombow watercolor markers in my purse. I also use copic pens for line work and sometimes I use Stabilo fine markers for smaller colored line-work.

I live in an Edwardian apartment in San Francisco.

I usually like to work in the corner of my dining room near the window. Outside is an area we call the grotto. You can see some ruins of the previous building that was destroyed in the big quake of 1906. Also sometimes it is a popular hangout for the local raccoons.

As is common for these types of apartments, my main living and working area is a double parlor with living room on one side

and dining room on the other. I have my drawing area in the dining room and my desk with computer, wacom pad, big screen and printers in the living room.

I like to work in the daytime when the light is better, but sometimes I work in the evenings too. Sometimes I just sketch in my sketchbook on the sofa in the evenings for fun and whatever comes of that.

I think of my work and drawing paintings with markers. The giraffe in progress below is an early version of the finished one I posted yesterday.

New York City

New York City was a lot of fun. Five days of eating and walking and looking at art and shopping. I love the MOMA - it contains some of my favorite paintings -beautiful Matisses and Rothkos and some beautiful vintage London Tube posters.

A visit from a chicken

Some days turn out to be really fun quite unexpectedly...I came back to my apartment around 1 o'clock to find a young chicken waiting on the front steps. he was very friendly and in no time I was sitting on the steps with a chicken in my lap. So any way, I brought him into the apartment where he was very comfortable, gave him some oatmeal and he followed me about...I called Animal Control and they came and got him. I thought about keeping him but a chicken in an apartment isn't really a good idea and it's strictly no pets here.

In the background of this first picture, you can see the wonderful artwork of Thereza Rowe who is quite a chicken fan herself.

He'll probably be adopted to a ranch somewhere according to the guy who came to get him. He was like a little dog and will make someone a lovely pet.

Someone gave me a big pile of printer paper, some starting to yellow around the edges making it unusable for printing. I figured; why not try drawing on it.
It gives a kind of 70s effect when used with markers, I think.....

I saw the new Alice in Wonderland last night and loved the movie. The 3D thing isn't so great on my eyes though. I think it's better to sit further back in the cinema than we did...
Anyway the girl who played Alice was great and and I enjoyed Alan Rickman as the caterpillar.

The story was closer to the Through the Looking Glasses than the ads suggested or I expected and it inspired me.....

I've been busy the last few days updating my other site which concentrates on some of my visual and interactive work. I've still got some more to do before I am satisfied, and I am putting out a new release each evening....ah we designers are a bit obsessive, aren't we?;)

Paper Cut-outs

Lately I have been noticing a lot of paper cut outs and collages....
In store windows in down-town San Francisco,

on the many blogs I read from London and other places.

For a while now I have been recycling many beautiful catalog papers for gift wraps and other projects,
